Four-Year-Old Boy from Zambia Celebrates Successful Heart Procedure With Summertime BBQ Picnic

ROSLYN, NY, May 23, 2018

On Thursday, May 24th, four-year-old Milton Miti of Zambia celebrates his new lease on life by joining doctors and staff who fixed his broken heart at St. Francis Hospital to kick off the unofficial start of summer with a BBQ picnic. Milton received a life-saving procedure to repair a hole in his heart caused by Patent Ductus Arteriosus or PDA, a congenital heart defect that made him too tired to play like most children his age and severely limited his appetite. On Thursday to mark his new lease on life, he FINALLY kicks around a soccer ball and eats hamburgers and hot dogs – a four-year-old’s dream.

Milton’s life-saving trip to the U.S. was sponsored by Gift of Life, Inc. and the Interact Club at Manhasset High School, a youth organization connected to the Rotary Club that raised $5,000 to help cover costs for Milton’s medical care. Members of the club will reunite with him just before Memorial Day weekend to celebrate his first holiday picnic in this country.
